Total to open $3bn plant in Egypt

Egypt’s Petroleum Ministry has announced French oil major Total is set to sign a contract with the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company to build a $3-billion plant for the production of olefins by steam cracking of natural gas. To be set up in the industrial zone in the north west of the Gulf of Suez, the plant will have an expected annual production capacity of 470,000 tonnes of polypropylene, 185,000 tonnes of gasoline, 40,000 tonnes of LPG, and 530,000 tonnes of acetic. The plant will be established over a three-year period, to begin production by late 2014, the Ministry said.
